no room for criticism

So today the tweets are flying about that new Tim Burton movie, and I and another tweeter comment on the disappointment of how 8 of 9 “sexless” dolls are voiced by men, one, just one, by a woman.

To me, that’s too bad. Aside from the sucky perpetuation of the idea that male is default, it will undoubtedly reduce the number of people who see the movie.

But still, you know, I’ll see the movie. I never said it was a dealbreaker. It’s a “dang” moment, a “could have done better” comment. And still the backlash.

It’s a bummer in the same way that most (like 90 percent?) of the cast of Star Trek is male–and that the people of color are deep in minor supporting roles. I loved the movie. LOVED it. But it’s still a valid criticism.

Susan Sarandon once said something I really like. Everything’s political. It’s just that some things are political in that they follow the status quo.

Some folks don’t want you to lay a finger on their escapism, no matter what the cost. Too bad for them.
